Meditation on Spring

Our Meditation on Spring will help you prepare for the coming Spring, create new goals with fresh energy. By using the metaphor of your life as a garden we can employ creative visualization to give birth to a positive, forward-looking vision of our life, our goals and how to actualize them.

In the philosophy of Chinese Medicine and the 5 elements we can see how we are all connected to nature during the change of seasons. We are coming out of Winter now which is governed by the element of water.  It has been a time of inwardness, a time of rest and conserving our energy.  The water element nourishes us so that we can optimize the outward, renewal energy of Spring.

The new season, Spring is governed by the wood element.  A great example of this is seen in the forsythia bush, one of the first blossoms of Spring.  The wood element is so evident in the woody toughness of the branches, the rootedness and strength of the plant that creates its structure, so that the buds can burst forth with colour, life and energy. It is a wonderful reminder of the renewal, birth and regeneration that occurs at this time of year. During the new moon of Spring the opportunities of Spring increase in potency.

The wood element is also evident in our body and is revealed through examining the balance or imbalance of the liver and gall bladder meridians.  In Chinese medicine, the liver is thought to be the seat of the soul and spiritual wisdom in the body, and the gall bladder is the organ of wise judgment, planning and decision making.

By observing how plants grow, we learn how to be more flexible and stronger.  When plants are out of balance, there’s an overgrowth of weeds, crippling the growth of trees.  A poor root system also results, creating tall spindly trees or brittle trees that never reach their full potential.

We can see how this translates to humans.  People with imbalances with the wood element might feel stuck, too rigid, unable to move forward.  They might be disorganized, have poor planning ability and lack of clarity in their vision.  They might feel angry, irritated, and frustrated, which are the emotions associated with the liver.

When wood is in balance, we are focused, we know who we are, where we’re going and how to get there, while also being fully rooted in our history and traditions. We can deal with anger effectively. Our vision is clear, we’re able to see the overall plan and make the day-to-day decisions for getting to our goals successfully.

Let’s now prepare for the meditation. There will be periods of silence during this meditation so you can contemplate the images.  If you feel yourself getting drowsy, take a deep breath, sit up straight, align yourself and re-focus to get the most out of this meditation.  But there’s no judgement. If you fall asleep that means your body needs more rest and on a subliminal or subconscious level, you will still get the benefit. Please enjoy this inspiring meditation on Spring.
