True Self Meditation

Our True Self meditation explores: “What is the true self?”  The True Self is nothing and everything, containing all the potential we are capable of.  It is our inner resource for our guidance, creativity, compassion and connection to the All-in-All, the Divine.

Different spiritual traditions have different words for that abiding essence often referred to as the “true self”.

  • In Christianity, there is the Christ Consciousness.

  • In Islam there is the Soul.

  • In Buddhism, there is the Buddha Nature.

  • In Zen, it is the No-self.

  • In Hinduism there is the Atman.

  • In Judaism there is Neshamah.

  • …and from transpersonal psychology Internal Family Systems therapy defines it is as the Core Self, made up of the 8 “C”s: They are listed as: calm, clear, compassionate, confident, connected, courageous, creative and curious.

Although many philosophies and spiritual paths define it differently, the underlying meaning of our true self is that aspect of our being that aspires to be the highest within us.

The more we can let go of the things that tend to separate us from others, for example, our personality’s needs, desires, uninformed thoughts and beliefs, hatred, fears and so forth, the more the nature of the true self can be revealed to us. How do we, “let go”?

Through the practice of meditation, we become aware of many different aspects of our personality. We discover and confront those qualities that separate us from the best that is within us, our, “True Self”. Those needs, desires, negative feelings, thoughts, etc. we begin to see as those aspects of our selves that are interrupting our meditation.

We then work to listen to messages and meaning of those areas of our self without getting caught up in them. We can also thank those parts of us for reminding us of our humanity and refocus on the essence which is our true self.  We learn to return to silence and the breath.  As we quiet the mind we create space for the true self to emerge. We relax into that inner knowing which we begin to recognize as our natural state. Without striving, we arrive, like with an old friend after a long absence, we pick up where we left off.

We just need to stop, to listen and be in this present moment, this eternal now.

This True Self Meditation contains periods of silence.
